Rex Bell Elementary School was built in 1963. The school is one of two identified in need of replacement, after an examination of its current condition.

 

The school’s namesake was a well-known and esteemed figure in the community. Rex Bell was twice elected lieutenant governor of the state of Nevada, and he was also an actor in more than 50 Hollywood movies, primarily Westerns.

 

Start of construction: June 2016

 

Estimated completion: June 2017

Designed to accommodate 850 students, eliminating 14 portables.

 

Project budget: $27,955,281

 

Construction of the new school will be done in phases:
  • New school is built
  • Move files and teachers’ equipment from the old school to the new school
  • CCSD Facilities team will salvage any functional equipment from the old school
  • Old school is demolished
  • Construction of playground and field begins

 

The new elementary school will be a two-story building, with 53 classrooms including:
  • 1 PE classroom
  • 1 Art classroom
  • 1 Music classroom
  • 1 GATE classroom
  • 1 Literacy classroom
  • 1 STEM classroom
  • 2 Resource classrooms
  • 2 Flexible classrooms
  • 1 Early childhood classroom
  • 1 Pre-K classroom
  • 2 Special education classrooms
  • 6 Kindergarten (full-day) classrooms
  • 17 Grade 1-2 classrooms
  • 7 Grade 3 classrooms
  • 9 Grade 4-5 classrooms

 

The new school is a custom design. A new parent center will be housed in the original kindergarten building. Elements from that roof are being reused in the new multipurpose room structure.

The new school is a custom design. The playground will include a memorial plaque, provided by Nellis Air Force Base, for First Lieutenant Raynor L. Herbert.

 

On May 13, 1964, Herbert was a student pilot at Nellis AFB who was involved in a fatal accident during his pilot training. Upon failure of his aircraft, he chose to ride his plane down in an attempt to guide it into an uninhabited area, sacrificing his life in order to spare the lives of hundreds of students at Lincoln Elementary School.
